NOTES We’ve been watching a lot of David Lynch films lately. Lynch often includes performances of original songs in montage with the rest of the film, often a female vocalist. And we believe these songs underlie a particular structure in his work. More than merely strange and beautiful, they hint at a world beyond the one of the film and our own. As Žižek suggests in his film The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema, Lynch’s work often involves a meditation on the concept of voice. Anyway, we could go on and on talking about this, but we won’t bore you with the details. Basically, Jonny made a mix using various songs from Lynch films, especially the television series “Twin Peaks.” He chose the theme song from Final Fantasy 7, noting that the music is quite similar to the theme song from “Twin Peaks,” coincidentally or not. There’s also a Mr. Bungle track. Clearly fans of Blue Velvet, they reference the film a few times on their self-titled album and employ the old “Don’t you fucking look at me” chestnut in this track. There are also two Julee Cruise tracks, one of her own and one by Time of Orchids, on which she sang. Julee worked with Lynch on a few projects, including “Twin Peaks.” Finally, Reynard added an Arthur Russell track he thought David Lynch would totally use in a movie. Hope you enjoy it.
